What is Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo?

Vovinam is a modern Vietnamese martial art created in 1938 by Grandmaster Nguyễn Lộc. It combines traditional Vietnamese techniques with carefully selected elements from other systems. Training follows the principle of balance between hardness and softness, developing self‑defence skills, physical fitness, confidence and character.

Grandmaster Nguyễn Lộc (1912–1960)

Grandmaster Nguyễn Lộc was born in Hữu Bằng village near Hà Nội. From a young age he studied Vietnamese wrestling and many traditional fighting systems. In 1938 he presented Vovinam to the public with the vision of giving ordinary people an effective way to protect themselves and to strengthen Vietnamese identity. After moving to the South, he and his students opened Vovinam schools and laid the foundation for the art’s growth around the world.

Master Nguyễn Đình Thư – Head Instructor

Master Nguyễn Đinh Thư is a 3rd‑degree Red Belt with decades of experience in Vovinam. He has been teaching in Vancouver since 2004, helping generations of students connect with Vietnamese culture and the values of martial arts. His classes emphasise discipline, respect, humility and community spirit.
